Living Photography with Musicians

Having spent a good amount of time on the stage and in recording studios myself, one of my favorite persons to photograph are musicians. Performing is what musicians love to do, and it is common for performing artists to show their passion through movement and expression - the perfect subjects for living photography.

Last month I did some work at the North Carolina Folk Festival held in Greensboro. It was by far, the best moments I have experienced photographing musicians at work. In particular the group, Last Rays of Sunday, a traditional Irish band. I made a point to be at the gig early, while they were setting up. By doing so, I could get to know the artists and allow them to become familiar with me. It made a world of difference for the shoot! I think that by knowing me and what I wanted to accomplish for them, they felt more at ease. You can almost hear their music through their expressions in the resulting portfolio.

Musicians will show plenty of emotion without the prompting of a photographer, of course! But when I shoot up close, I make a point of establishing a relationship with them first. It allows them to see me more as a fellow musician than just a photographer. It is more fun for all of us!

To see more of my musician work stop by my portfolio.
