Studio Styles at Jassnight Portraits

Updated: Oct 5, 2024

Unique Portraiture Offered at Jassnight Photography Studio

Having your portrait done in a light-controlled studio can offer many unique opportunities to create the style of portraiture you are looking for. From formal business head shots to personal branding artisan portraits, studio controlled lighting and settings can do it all. Here are a few options that our studio can offer you.

Business/Professional Headshot

Need a new look on your business website or Linkedin profile? Business head shots give you a clean, professional look by using less dramatic lighting with clear, crisp features. Clients are encouraged to bring professional attire for the upper part of the body (shirts, ties, blouses, jackets) since these shots are mainly head and torso. Mostly solid backgrounds are used and you can choose between low-key (low contrast), or high-key (high contrast) lighting. These sittings can be simple and quick and can be done as a sprint session in our studio. However, most clients add this style to their sitting package when visiting the studio for more casual styles.

Traditional

This option emphasizes your every-day look. Your wardrobe for this should be what you like to wear at school, or going out with friends. Jeans, fun tops, casual shoes are the go to. Think of clothing that reflects your personal style, make you feel good about yourself, and enjoy being seen in. A simple dress or blouse will do too. Everything counts: framing would range from head and shoulders to full body photos in various poses from sitting, crouching, and standing.

Beauty/Paramount Style

Beauty shot

This style is commonly referred to as Paramount lighting because movie stars preferred this look in their promo photos in the 40s and 50s. It is timeless and translates well to black and white. The lighting is set up with a strong key light just above and in front of the subject giving soft definition to the client’s cheeks and nose. The point is to emphasize skin, hair, eyes, upper torso and shoulders. Because of this, consider wearing a top that will expose your shoulders and collarbones if you feel comfortable doing so. Options with more coverage will work too, just avoid distracting blousy accents or ruffles. Keep the colors solid and dark-toned. Black is best. Anything you wear below the waist won’t matter.

Personal Brand/Artisan Portraits

Studio lighting with gels

Here is where we get creative and do all kinds of things: color gels, silhouettes, long or double exposures, smoke, and even some light painting. Colorful clothing is encouraged. Maybe you have a colorful dress, blouse or casual shirt or jacket that reflects your brand. Don’t forget the props! (hats, scarves, etc…) This category also works well to emphasize your particular sport. Anything can happen here and the creativity is usually in real time. Come with ideas or just let the creativity juices flow during the shoot.

What to expect at your sitting

Clients who come to our studio usually choose a combination of these styles for their sitting. Since each style uses different lighting and staging, there is usually a break in between each which allows the client to relax or change their wardrobe. Not only do we have a green room where you can take a break and grab some refreshments between sets, but also a place where wardrobe changes can be made. Don’t forget to bring items for hair and makeup touchups. Clients are encouraged to bring people with them, whether it is friends, siblings, parents, or spouses. We will engage them in the creative process and encourage them to assist in the photo shoot. It is fun for everyone!
